ULTIMATE NATURE WALK / KAKAMEGA FOREST TOUR PACKAGE

DAY 1: VISIT TO KIT MIKAYI AND THE CRYING STONE

Depart from Kisumu in the morning and head to Kakamega Forest (THE ONLY RAIN FOREST IN KENYA). A forest said to be the last remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rain forest. The forest including reserves encloses 238 square kilometers. AMNI TOURS advices its guests who wish to visit Kakamega rain forest or any other forest in east Africa to revise their dress code as they visit the forest. Kakamega rain forest is very wet with an average of 1200mm - 1700mm per year. Rainfall is heaviest in April and May (long rains) with a slightly drier June with short rains in August to September. January and February are the driest months.

As you head to Kakamega forest, you will pass via KIT MIKAYI - the legend behind Kit Mikayi, Which is a Luo dialect means ‘stone of the first wife’; a legendary stone with both cultural and religious meaning. Kit Mikayi is a tor around 120 meters high. The explanation of the shape of the unique stone is that the structure represents Luo culture. The rock is also a sacred place for the villagers to worship in times of trouble.

You will then pass by and visit the mythical ‘crying stone of illesi’. It has the most striking feature that resembles a gowned figure perpetually in tears flowing from head to toe; an image spiced up by myth and folk fore.

You will then head to one of the best hotels in Kakamega forest, check in, refresh and go for a short nature walk.

Day 2

Have hot breakfast before heading for a long forest walk to view the forest’s famous birds as the forest has 367 bird species recorded with at least 9 endemic species. Africa’s greatest flora (hard and soft woods), 380 recorded species of plants including 60 species of fern, 150 species of trees and shrubs 170 species of flowering plants including 60 species of orchids with 9 endemic species found only in Kakamega forest.

Mammals that exist in the park include bush pigs, duikers, bushbuck, African clawless otter, flying squirrels, monkeys...

You will then head back to your hotel to check out and you will be dropped off at a central point with memories to cherish forever.
